Preheat oven to 180c. Cream butter and sugar in a bowl until creamy. Beat in syrup, Work in half the flour, Stir in smarties with the remaining flour and work the dough between your fingers, Divide into 14 balls, Place them, well spaced apart, on two baking sheets. Do not flatten them. Bake for 12 mins., until pale and golden on the edges. Cool on a wire rack.
