Our answer

Nigella's Chocolate Olive Oil Cake (from NIGELLISSIMA) can be made with regular flour or as a gluten-free version with ground almonds. Ground almonds in the UK are made from finely ground blanched almonds.

In other countries you can often get two types of ground almonds. There is almond flour, which may also be labelled as super-fine almond flour, made from blanched (skinned) almonds. This has a uniform off-white colour and is best if the cake or cookies need to have a pale colour. There is also almond meal, which is made from skin-on almonds and you tend to see some brown flecks in the almond meal from the skins. Both almond flour and almond meal can be used for the cake as it is a chocolate cake and the colour of the almonds is not important. So we would suggest using the almond meal or flour that is easiest to find in your supermarket.
