Alternative to Ricotta

Full question
Can I use mascarpone cheese as a substitute for ricotta when making Sambuca Kisses? I cannot get hold of ricotta anywhere!
Our answer
Nigella's Sambuca Kisses (from NIGELLISSIMA) are light fritters made with ricotta cheese, eggs and a little flour. Ricotta is a medium to low fat Italian curd cheese that has a light, slightly grainy texture. Mascarpone is an Italian cream cheese with a high fat content and a dense texture. Although mascarpone would in theory work in the recipe we are concerned that the texture of the Sambuca Kisses will be much heavier and they will not be light and airy to eat. So unfortunately it is not a substitution that we would recommend.
Ricotta is a simple curd cheese made with milk, cream and an acid such as lemon juice. So if you have the time and the fridge space then it is not difficult to make at home and you can find several recipes on the internet. A full-fat or whole milk cottage cheese may work as an alternative but you would need to drain it slightly before using it and also possibly blend it to give a smoother texture. Also as we have not tried this alternative we are unable to guarantee the results.
