Banana Bread Us Quantities

Asked by kokocat. Answered on 4th November 2014

Full question

Hello! I have bought "How to be a domestic Goddess" book a few years ago and baked many of lovely cakes from this book. I've found this site by chance recently. I wonder why Banana Bread has different amount of some ingredients between this page and the book? I followed my book to make the bread and I got a wonderful result. I don't want to change any amount for the ingredients. Have you updated this bread recipe? Thank you. Koko

Our answer

Nigella's Banana Bread recipe from Domestic Goddess is very popular and so has also been featured on the website. There are some differences between the US version of the book and the website version. The flour quantity in the book is 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons and on the website it is 1 1/4 cups. As the website format has limited space we have to round up quantities sometimes and in this instance the flour was rounded up to 1 1/4 cups. However the difference is small, only 2 tablespoons or about 25g, and should not affect the finished banana bread.

For the sugar unfortunately there was an error in the earlier editions of the book and the correct amount of sugar should be 3/4 cup. This has been corrected for reprints. For banana recipes the fruits themselves can be quite sweet so if you prefer the lower level of sugar then it is fine to use 1/2 cup.
