Full question
Hello, can you bake Nigella’s Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake in a circular tin and if so any advice on cooking times? It’s my favourite cake and I’d like to try and make it into a birthday cake for my toddler. Thank you very much.
Our answer
Nigella's Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake (from HOW TO BE A DOMESTIC GODDESS) is a dense and squidgy cake made with brown sugar and dark chocolate. It is usually baked in a 900g (2-pound) loaf pan. This type of pan has a capacity of around 2 litres, which suggests that the recipe would probably adapt to a 23cm (9-inch) round springform pan, but don't fill the pan more than half full. As the cake is quite moist and tender it may be better as a single layer cake rather than as a sandwich cake.
The baking time for the loaf cake is around 45 minutes. Usually a loaf cake will take longer to bake than a round cake, which would suggest the baking time is around 30-40 minutes. We would probably stick with baking for 30 minutes at the higher temperature and then reduce the oven temperature for the last 10 minutes or so. However, as this cake has quite a high proportion of sugar, you may need to keep an eye on it and reduce the oven temperature slightly earlier if it looks like the edges of the cake are becoming too dark too quickly. But please note that as we have not tried the cake in this form, we are unable to guarantee the results.
