Can I use a dairy free, organic dark chocolate hazelnut spread instead of Nutella for the Nutella cheesecake? Or alternatively, can I mix a dark chocolate spread with Nutella? I just don't want it to be too sweet.
Our answer
Nigella's Nutella Cheesecake is an easy no-bake cheesecake that has an almost mousse-like filling that is flavoured with Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread. We would mention that the cheesecake is not actually that sweet as the slight acidity of the cream cheese offsets the sweetness of the Nutella. You could leave out the icing (confectioners') sugar from the cheeseake filling if you are worried about the sweetness, but in our opinion it is not too sweet or cloying.
If you are using an organic dark chocolate hazelnut spread then you just need to be a little careful about the texture of the spread, as if it is grainy or stiff then it will give the cheesecake a slightly odd texture. However, if it is smooth and has the same spreadable texture as Nutella then it should work in the cheesecake. If using a dark spread then we would suggest using the icing sugar in the recipe. We would also mention that as we have not tried the cheesecake with a dark chocolate hazelnut spread ourselves, we are unable to guarantee the results.
