How do I know when the Chocolate Honey Cake is cooked properly? Is it the usual 'a skewer comes out clean'?

Our answer

Nigella's Honey Chocolate Cake (from FEAST) is a moist chocolate cake with a sticky chocolate and honey glaze. The cake batter is quite liquid, which means that the baking time can vary in different ovens.

When the cake is baked, the top should feel firm and the edges of the cake should be starting to pull away from the sides of the cake pan. A cake tester inserted into the centre of the cake should come out clean or have just a few small crumbs attached to it. If there is any trace of cake batter then return the cake to the oven and bake for a further 5-10 minutes before testing again. As the cake contains both honey and sugar it can brown very quickly, so we suggest checking the cake carefully after 45 minutes and if it looks like the cake is getting too dark at the edges then cover the cake pan with foil and continue baking.
