Cranberry Alternative in Mincemeat
Asked by jack2k6. Answered on 3rd October 2015
Full question
I normally make the Cranberry Studded Mincemeat but I am unable to eat cranberries anymore due to blood-thinners. Could I use a different fruit?
Our answer
Nigella's Cranberry Studded Mincemeat (from Christmas and on the Nigella website) uses a combination of fresh and dried cranberries. We are not sure if dried cranberries are also not allowed but these can be replaced with dried sour cherries or a combination of 15g (2 tablespoons) each extra currants and raisins
For the fresh cranberries you can use the a peeled, cored and grated tart apple. Use one regular Granny Smith or a small Bramley cooking apple. You may prefer instead to look at one of Nigella's other mincemeat recipes that do not contain cranberries. As quinces are in season in October you may like to try Nigella's Quincemeat (from Domestic Goddess), or Hettie Potter's Suet-Free Mincemeat (also fromDomestic Goddess). The mincemeats can be made ahead and kept in the refrigerator for up to 1 month or frozen for up to 3 months (thaw overnight in the fridge before using).
