Full question
I love the look of the Croque Monsieur Bake. However, I do not like mustard and it seems that Nigella likes to use lashings of the stuff - could I use a substitute?
Our answer
Nigella's Croque Monsieur Bake (from NIGELLA EXPRESS) is a savoury version of a bread and butter pudding, sometimes called a strata. It is easy to make and can be assembled in advance, making it a perfect dish for a celebratory breakfast, a brunch or a cozy supper.
The bread slices are spread with Dijon mustard as this adds piquancy and a kick to the finished dish, however if you don't like mustard then it is fine just to omit it altogether. You could add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce to the egg and milk mixture to add a little extra savouriness or even a little hot sauce if you like a chilli kick, though add carefully as these sauces can easily become too assertive.
