Full question
The Crab Mac 'n' Cheese looks amazing, but I’m horridly allergic to all shellfish. Is there something I can substitute in for a similar result?
Our answer
Nigella's Crab Mac 'n' Cheese (from COOK, EAT, REPEAT) has a rich cheese sauce that is boosted with the sweet and briny flavour of crab. Unfortunately if you have a complete shellfish allergy it is difficult to suggest an alternative, but we would say that the mac 'n' cheese is still pretty spectacular without it and you may just need to season the sauce slightly more. You could maybe crumble some crisply cooked bacon over the top just before serving.
For those who are only allergic to crab, or don't like crab, then you could substitute another shellfish such as langoustine tails or prawns or shrimp. However, lobster may be slightly too rich so we would prefer to avoid this as a substitute. We would also mention that one person posted in the Comments section for this recipe that they have used crayfish tails instead, with excellent results. In the UK make sure you buy the crayfish from a properly licensed source.
