Full question
I'd like to try the Old-Fashioned Sandwich Loaf. Can I prepare it in the evening and put in the fridge to bake it in the morning? Thank you for your help.
Our answer
Nigella's Old-Fashioned Sandwich Loaf (from COOK, EAT, REPEAT) is a satisfying white loaf with a crisp crust and a soft crumb. The texture of the bread comes from the inclusion of soured milk (or sour cream) and the method for the dough, which involves very little kneading.
You can mix and knead the bread and then leave the dough, covered in its bowl, to do its first rise overnight in the fridge. In the morning you will need to let the dough come to room temperature before you shape the loaf and let it rise for a second time in the loaf tin. The length of time needed for the dough to come to room temperature will vary according to the temperature of your kitchen, but we would suggest allowing at least an hour for it to come to temperature, plus the time needed for the second rise. The Old-Fashioned Sandwich Loaf is the recipe for the January 2021 Cookalong.
