Maturing Time For Chutney

Asked by YoYo50. Answered on 9th December 2018

Full question

I made the Christmas Chutney at the end of November. Had intended to make it earlier but ran out time! Will it have matured enough in 1 month to use at Christmas?

Our answer

Nigella's Christmas Chutney (from NIGELLA CHRISMAS) is ideal as a home made Christmas gift or to serve with cheese and cold meats over the festive season. Ideally all chutney should have some time to mature in a cool, dry place away from bright light. Over this period the flavour of the chutney mellows and becomes less acidic or "vinegary".

The Christmas Chutney should be ready to eat after a month and once opened the jar should be kept in the fridge and used within one month. However, if you want to have a chutney to serve at Christmas and prefer to try other options then you may like to consider Nigella's Fig And Olive Chutney. This chutney is quick to make, can be eaten immediately and will keep for up to a month in the fridge, so it could be made a couple of weeks before Christmas. The Chilli Jam is also an excellent condiment to serve with cold cuts and cheese and can be used straight away.
