Our answer

Nigella's Rocky Road Crunch Bars (from NIGELLA EXPRESS) are made with crushed biscuits (cookies), dark chocolate, butter and golden syrup. The golden syrup mainly provides sweetness, though it also helps to prevent the bars from becoming too solid when chilled. Golden syrup is a very viscous syrup that is intensely sweet. Unfortunately sweetened condensed milk would not be a good alternative as it is thinner and less sweet.

If you can't find golden syrup then you can use light agave syrup, light corn syrup or glucose syrup as alternatives. You can also use a runny or liquid honey as an alternative, but make sure that it is a mild honey as a strongly flavoured honey could affect the taste of the bars. Nigella's Breakfast Bars are made with sweetened condensed milk and you may like to try these if you have a can of the milk to use up.
