Smoked Fish in Nursery Fish Pie

Asked by komikool. Answered on 1st January 2015

Full question

I dont have access to smoked fish meat that is used in the Nursery Fish Pie. Can I use unsmoked/raw fish?

Our answer

Nigella's Nursery Fish Pie uses a combination of smoked and plain haddock. Smoked haddock is popular and easy to find in the UK but we do appreciate that it is much more difficult to find in other countries. If you live in the US then you may find it in a fishmonger, labelled as Finnan Haddie.

Smoked haddock is also slightly different to other smoked fish, such as smoked salmon, as although it is smoked it still needs cooking before it is eaten. It is therefore fairly easy to substitute the smoked haddock with another fish, though season the sauce well as it will lack the slightly smokey, slightly salty flavours of the smoked haddock. You could substitute haddock or cod but often people like to use salmon in combination with the white fish in a fish pie. Use a tail end piece of salmon instead of the haddock and cook following the recipe instructions.
