Volume Measurements for Hokey Pokey
Asked by Zedstar. Answered on 1st February 2015
Full question
I'm trying to make the Hokey Pokey, however I live in Japan and as such don't have access to British volume measuring spoons. What would be the measurement volumes in ml for 1 teaspoon and 1 tablespoon as used in the Hokey Pokey recipe?
Our answer
Nigella uses measuring spoons that are a standard size for the UK and US. For 1 tablespoon the volume is 15ml and for the teaspoon the volume is 5ml. It is possible to buy sets of measuring spoons - each set has 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon and 1/4 teaspoon. If you are doing a lot of baking then it is worth seeing if you can get hold of a set. Some companies will ship internationally and as the spoon sets are quite small we hope that the postage or shipping costs may not be prohibitive.
For the golden syrup or corn syrup in the Hokey Pokey recipe (from Nigella Express and on the Nigella website) you may find it easier weigh it direct into the pan instead. 4 tablespoons weighs 75g. We would also mention that if you are living in a humid environment then you will find that the Hokey Pokey will turn soft quite quickly as it tends to absorb moisture from the air very easily.
