Although these were a bit stressful to make (mine didn't seem to rise at all during the second stage of proving), I'm glad this recipe came up as one of the competition recipes - otherwise I probably never would have had a go at making them. I've never used cardamom pods or cloves before, but they really seemed to give the hot cross buns their signature taste! I can't say mine are the best looking - but they certainly taste better than they look (thank goodness).

I also found the second prove a little sluggish, but it got there in the end. (it was a very cold day, which didn't help) I agree about the cardamon infusion; it comes through as a subtle note rather than a full throttle blast. They look great, too.
