This is the first cake that I ever made successfully from scratch. I’ve made it for dinner parties, work events, girls nights in, baby showers. I started following Nigella’s trusty word exactly with the fluffy foamy top and now, while the heart of the cake stays the same, I sparkle up the outside to suit the occasion or the person and make it extra special. This time, for my best friend’s birthday - raspberry and strawberry purée added to the cream cheese frosting with fresh berries and garden roses. Proud as I was of how joyous and special our Guinness cake friend looked, the best part is always—always—the smiles.
