I used royal icing (I'm just learning how) but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. These are my favorite cookies to make - I use the same recipe at Christmas, Valentines and Easter, though the royal icing is new for me. Also, as a side note, these are really fun for kids to decorate with buttercream frosting.
