This cake, in its contemplative blackness, is exceptionally (and surprisingly) sweet and comforting. Perfect for an intimate celebration, it is the kind of cake that catches everybody's eyes as soon as it arrives at the table. I have baked it many times and it seems that each time this cake improves from the simplicity of baking it. Sheer serendipity. The frosting, which I enriched with just a touch of Irish Cream Liqueur, blended perfectly with the earthy flavor of the cake. Oh, absolutely delightful!
