Black Girl Baking is just the book I need now: full of recipes that make the idea of going into a dark and difficult winter more manageable; a friendly voice to keep you company in the kitchen. The recipes are simple but luscious: Sea Salt Butterscotch Tart (with a press-in not roll-out crust); Baked Buttermilk Beignets; Cinnamon Toast Crunch Bars; Honey Buns; Carrot Cake Cheesecake, just to give you an idea. It’s such a warm and welcoming book. And because Jerrelle Guy is an erstwhile vegan, she gives vegan (and gluten-free) options and recipes wherever possible. The recipe I’ve chosen to share with you (because how could I not?) is her Apple Cider Monkey Bread, a pull-apart, sweet yeasted bread with a divinely sticky aromatic glaze (there is also a vegan option for this) and just the thing for the cold weekends ahead.
