[preheat oven to 180°C] mix butter and vanilla together until creamy. add sugar, beat until fluffy. add eggs, beating in well after each. fold in flour. bring cup of water to boil in pan, stir in dates and bicarb. add the soaked dates to the mixture and combine well. pour into a flan-type dish. bake for 20 mins. add sauce ingredients to a small saucepan and heat through. make forkholes in the top of your baked cake. pour the sauce over! lick the spoon.

- 63 millilitres cream
- 75 grams butter
- ½ teaspoon vanilla

- 2⅛ ounces unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 6¾ ounces sugar
- 2 eggs
- 6¾ ounces self-rising flour
- 6¾ ounces dates (chopped)
- 9 fluid ounces water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
For the Sauce
- 2⅔ ounces sugar
- 2 fluid ounces cream
- 2⅔ ounces butter
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
