Combine all ingredients in a large pot and boil hard for 20 to 30 minutes, then simmer for an hour or two, until the peas are nice and soft. Remove hambone and serve. If desired, sieve or puree soup for a smooth texture. Salt and pepper to taste.
Introduction
This is a good "beginner's" soup. You can also leave out the ham and hambone for a vegetarian version.
