Introduction

An easy to make, delicious rich chocolate cake. I have used this recipe for at least 15 years as a celebration cake.

Ingredients

Serves: 12

Metric Cups

For the Chocolate Cake

  • 150 grams self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 100 grams caster sugar
  • 1 tablespoon black treacle
  • 150 millilitres sunflower oil
  • 150 millilitres milk
  • 2 large eggs

For the Sandwiching Together

  • jam (or conserve of your choice - I use cherry conserve)
  • cream (thick)

For the Chocolate Cake

  • 5 ounces self-rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 ounces superfine sugar
  • 1 tablespoon black molasses
  • 5¼ fluid ounces vegetable oil
  • 5¼ fluid ounces milk
  • 2 large eggs

For the Sandwiching Together

  • preserves (or conserve of your choice - I use cherry conserve)
  • cream (thick)

Method

Michael Barry's Crafty Chocolate Cake is a community recipe submitted by Rose H and has not been tested by Nigella.com so we are not able to answer questions regarding this recipe.

  • Pre-heat oven to 160 deg C/325 deg F/Gas3
  • Put all of the ingredients into a food processor or food mixer and blend until a dark brown creamy batter.
  • Pour into 2 greased/bottom lined sandwich tins.
  • Bake for 15 minutes and turn down the oven to 150 deg C/300 deg F/ Gas 2 for a further 10 - 15 minutes, until coming away from the edge of the tins.
  • Remove from the oven, and from the tins onto a cooling rack.
  • Once cool sandwich together with Jam/Conserve of choice and thick cream.
