When adding chocolate chips, nuts, dried fruit etc. to a cake or biscuit batter, add them before you fold in the dried ingredients, this will make sure they are divided evenly and there will be less chance of developing the glutens in the flour because of extra-mixing! (plus trying to fold chocolate chips into a cookie dough can lead to quite an arm-ache after a while!)
