This is the only thing that I have found to actually work, apart from using a food processor. Make sure your knife is as sharp as it can possibly be. That way, it slices properly through the wee cells. A really sharp knife will cause less damage to cell walls, and fewer irritants will be released. It works even better if the onion is cold. I always sharpen my knife right before cutting the beasties.
