Full question
Can I use something instead of beans in the beans, beef and pasta dish? I'm allergic to beans, chickpeas, lentils, nuts.
Our answer
Nigella's Beef And Beans With Pasta (from HOW TO EAT) is a hearty one-pot recipe that is great for all of the family. The beans add some texture and variety to the dish and help to make it more of a complete meal.
If you are allergic to legumes then you can certainly omit the beans from the dish. Just bear in mind that without the beans it will probably serve 3 rather than 4 adults or older children. If you want to add something extra then you could try adding drained canned sweetcorn as an alternative, particularly for children. Otherwise, you could add sauteed mushrooms or cubes of aubergine just before serving, though it will no longer be a one pot recipe. If you don't use canned beans then you should taste the dish before serving it, as without the beans it may need a touch of extra seasoning.
