Full question
Can the Mozzarella In Carrozza be made in an electric grill (such as a George Foreman grill)? Would appreciate advice. Sandwich sounds delicious.
Our answer
NIgella's Mozzarella In Carozza (from NIGELLA BITES) is a mozzarella cheese sandwich that is coated with egg and then fried in a little oil. Mozzarella "in carozza" is translated as mozzarella "in a carriage" as the melted cheese is transported in a golden, crisp crust. Electric contact grills cook food between two hot plates (usually ridged) and can be used for some toasted sandwiches, such as panini.
In our experience, these grills can work for some grilled or toasted sandwiches, though if the filling is cheese then it often melts out of the sides of the sandwich and onto the grill plate. For the Mozzarella In Carozza, the cheese should be completely enclosed by the bread crust and our worry would be that as you press the two grill plates together, this will force the cheese out of the sandwich and onto the grill. The egg coating could also stick to the ridges on the grill plates, though it depends how good the non-stick coating is, and this could ruin the crust. Overall we think that for this particular sandwich, you will get a significantly better result if you cook the Mozzarella In Carozza in a frying pan.
