Full question
I can't find liquorice pellets where I live. Could I serve a difference sauce with the Basque Burnt Cheesecake?
Our answer
Nigella's Basque Burnt Cheesecake (from COOK, EAT, REPEAT) is served with a Liquorice Sauce and blackberries. This combination was inspired by a dessert that Nigella ate at the London restaurant Sabor, but it is not the only option.
One of the wonderful things about a vanilla cheesecake is that its flavour goes well with many options. As the cheesecake is served with blackberries, you could make a blackberry sauce or a sauce from raspberries or mixed berries to serve with the cheesecake. Cook the berries with a little sugar until soft and puree the berries, adding a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten the sauce if necessary. Strain the sauce if you prefer to serve it without seeds. Maple syrup is also a good accompaniment to vanilla cheesecake or you could serve the Salted Caramel Sauce instead. The Blueberry Compote that accompanies the Lemon Tendercake is another possibility or, if in season, just spoon some seeds and pulp from a ripe passionfruit or two over the cheesecake slices and serve with mixed berries.
