Can I Use Calamondin Oranges For The Clementine Cake?

Asked by Heatherboo. Answered on 18th February 2024

Full question

Can I substitute Calamondin oranges for clementines in the Clementine Cake? I have a full tree of them with which I only make marmalade with due to their tartness. They have thin skins and I can easily remove seeds.

Our answer

Nigella's Clementine Cake (from HOW TO EAT) is a gluten-free cake that is made using whole clementines that are simmered until soft and then puréed. If the calamondin oranges are thin-skinned then they should be a suitable alternative for the clementines, particularly if they don't have a lot of white pith that can make the cake taste bitter. Once you have cooked the oranges we would suggest removing the seeds before puréeing them as the seeds can also be quite bitter. This should be fairly easy as the cooked oranges will be very soft. If the oranges are large then you may need to simmer them for slightly longer than the clementines (larger oranges can take up to 2 hours).

If you have a lot of the oranges then we would also suggest using them instead of Seville oranges for the Bitter Orange Tart, No-Churn Bitter Orange Ice Cream or the Chicken Traybake With Bitter Orange And fennel. You could also try them as a substitute for lemons in the Lemon Polenta Cake.
