Full question

Can I use canned crabmeat as a substitute for canned salmon in fishcake recipe? Seems like it might work, or could it backfire badly? Thank you!

Our answer

Nigella's Salmon Fishcakes (from NIGELLA BITES) are a storecupboard standby as they are made with tinned or canned salmon and leftover mashed potatoes. The fishcakes can be formed and fried very quickly.

Unfortunately we are not sure that canned crabmeat would be a great alternative. Canned salmon tends to be nothing but fish, with a little salt added. Crabmeat is usually canned in brine and even if it is drained thoroughly it tends to be a little on the wet side, which would make the fishcake mixture wetter and harder to form into patties that could be fried. So on balance we would not recommend it ourselves, though you could try using crabmeat if you wanted. Instead, we would suggest using the canned crabmeat for Nigella's Tuna And Crab Avocado Wraps.
