Full question
I was wondering if I can make the Green Tahini Sauce with basil, because that’s what’s in the fridge?
Our answer
Nigella's Green Tahini Sauce (from COOK, EAT, REPEAT) is a sauce that has a multitude of uses, including accompanying vegetable, meat or fish dishes, drizzled over salads or stirred into soups. It is made with a combination of fresh coriander (cilantro) and parsley, as the flavours of the herbs complement the smokiness of the tahini.
Basil is a soft herb that is also found in the same regions as parsley and coriander and has a slightly citrussy note, in common with coriander. So using basil in the sauce would probably work. However, we would not use basil on its own but in combination with some parsley and maybe also coriander. The beauty of the sauce is that it is a combination of herbs rather than just one, so no one herb flavour is too assertive.
