Full question
What do you think of using liquorice powder instead of cocoa powder for the delicious Cheesy Chilli? Something tells me it could work.
Our answer
Nigella's Cheesy Chilli (from KITCHEN is a quick dish that takes its flavour from the smoked paprika that is in the chorizo sausage. A little cocoa powder is added as this helps to round out the flavour of the chilli, and a small square of dark chocolate is often added to Mexican chillis and stews.
Liquorice powder has a deep aniseed flavour, which pairs well with chocolate, and anise is used in Mexican cooking. So we suspect that it could be used in the chilli instead of cocoa powder. As it is added in a small amount as a flavour enhancer, we are not sure if it would be strong enough to be noticed by liquorice haters, but we do think that it will be much appreciated by liquorice lovers.
