Chillies For A Simple Salsa

Asked by KAVITHA. Answered on 24th April 2019

Full question

I would like to make the Simple Salsa but can't get fresh jalapenos in my part of India. Can I replace them with red chillies? If so what should be the quantity?

Our answer

Nigella's A Simple Salsa (from AT MY TABLE) is a sauce made with canned tomatoes and chillies. The recipe calls for jalapeno chillies, which are chillies with a medium heat. They are usually harvested while still green, though sometimes they are allowed to ripen to red.

You could substitute another fresh chilli and the colour matters less than the heat. You should use a mild to medium heat chilli. Red fresno chillies would be a good alternative. However, if the chillies available to you are very hot and spicy then you should remove the seeds before using and possibly think about using two rather than three chillies.
