Cocktail Sausages

Asked by Unknown. Answered on 1st September 2014

Full question

I'd love to make the sticky Cocktail Sausages for my kids but one if my sons is highly allergic to sesame seeds. What alternative oil could I use without spoiling the taste? Many thanks! Hayley.

Our answer

Nigella's Cocktail Sausages (from Nigella Express and on the Nigella website) have an Asian-influenced coating made from soy sauce, honey and sesame oil. The sesame oil adds a slightly toasty, nutty flavour. You could use toasted peanut oil as an alternative but it is not that easy to find. Otherwise we would suggest using a flavourless vegetable oil, such as sunflower oil, as this will not interfere with the other flavours and a soy-honey coating should still appeal to children.

You may also like to try Nigella's Cosmo Cocktail Sausages (on the Nigella website), which are flavoured with marmalade and cranberry (you can omit the vodka for children). And if your children have adventurous tastes then you may like to consider the Wholegrain Mustard And Ginger Cocktail Sausages from Nigella's book Kitchen.
