Coriander Substitute For Chicken And Mango Salad

Asked by Rowoli. Answered on 27th December 2016

Full question

I'm a complete newbie at cooking and don't know anything about herbs but I do know that my family doesn't like coriander, so I'm wondering if I could substitute the coriander called for in your Mango, Chicken and Chilli Salad with another herb like dill for example. Or is the coriander unnoticeable enough that they will enjoy it anyway? Thanks for your answer!

Our answer

Nigella's Chicken Mango And Chilli Salad (from NIGELLA SUMMER) is an Asian-inspired dish and a good recipe for using up leftover cooked turkey. The recipe includes a large handful or fresh coriander leaves that have been chopped. The coriander adds colour and some flavour to the salad and unfortunately if you do not like coriander then it is likely that it will be noticed in the salad.

It is possible to omit the coriander and some finely shredded mint would be a good alternative, as it will blend well with the other flavours in the salad. Mint is more assertive than coriander so we would suggest using about half of the amount. Many Asian salads use holy (or Thai) basil and this could be another alternative. Again it is strong in flavour so use a smaller amount, or use a handful of regular basil leaves.
