Freezing Tinned Figs

Asked by jackskitchen. Answered on 15th September 2011

Full question

Hi, could you tell me if it is possible to freeze tinned figs? I have been given a great big tin of these and I would hate to waste any. Thanks so much for your help.

Our answer

Most tinned or canned foods can be frozen once the tin has been opened. The quality of a food can deteriorate slightly during freezing, for example some items may turn slightly mushy on thawing, but this doesn't mean that the are "off". As tinned figs will have been cooked during the canning process they will already be quite soft and so should freeze fine and shouldn't be any the worse for wear after thawing.

Don't freeze unopened tins of food and once the tin has been opened the contents should be transferred to an airtight container for any fiurther storage, whether in the fridge or freezer. Cover the figs as much as possible with liquid from the tin before freezing and we would suggest freeing for up to 3 months for optimal quality. We would also suggest defrosting the figs in the refrigerator and using them within 2 days once they have thawed.
