Full question
Haddock now seems to be suffering from over-fishing. Is it possible to adjust Nigella's recipes for haddock?
Our answer
In March 2017 the Marine Stewardship Council removed haddock sourced from certain areas from its list of "sustainable fish to eat", as stock numbers fell below recommended levels. This is a fairly recent recommendation and Nigella's recipe for Spiced And Fried Haddock With Broccoli Puree is from SIMPLY NIGELLA, which was published two years ago while haddock stocks were generally considered sustainable.
For this recipe, and for all of Nigella's haddock recipes, any firm, chunky white fish fillets can be used and we have updated the recipe to reflect this. Hake or cod from sustainable fisheries would be good alternatives. For recipes with smoked haddock, substitute a similar smoked fish from sustainable sources. In addition, there are some areas where haddock stocks are still at acceptable levels and you should look for fish that is labelled as coming from a fishery approved by the Marine Stewardship Council. For further information and advice please see the Marine Stewardship Council's website.
