Full question
To make a 3D cake with Nigella's Buttermilk Birthday Cake, how much mixture would I need to use?
Our answer
Nigella's Buttermilk Birthday Cake (from HOW TO BE A DOMESTIC GODDESS is a popular cake as it is moist but has a fine crumb and a slightly firmer texture, which can make it good for some shaped cakes. The cake recipe makes enough for a two layer 20cm (8-inch) round cake or a deep 23cm (9-inch) round cake and for many shaped pans this is enough batter, but you should always check the instructions for the specific pan.
This quantity of cake mixture is also enough to make a deep 20cm (8-inch) sqare cake or a slightly skinnier 28 x 18 cm (11 x 7 inches) rectangular cake. For a larger rectangular cake of approximately 33 x 23 cm (13 x 9 inches) you should need to double the quantity of cake mixture, but as we have not tried the cake in this size we are unable to guarantee the results. The cake will keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days or can be frozen, tightly wrapped in a double layer of clingfilm (plastic wrap) and a layer of foil for up to 3 months.
