Our answer

Nigella's Om Ali (from HOW TO BE A DOMESTIC GODDESS) is made with filo pastry that has been cooked in the oven until crisp and is then baked with dried fruits and sweetened milk. A sort of Egyptian version of bread-and-butter pudding.

As the dish doesn't contain eggs, it is slightly easier to think about a vegan version of Om Ali and you can replace the melted butter with a suitable plant-based margarine. For the milk and cream you would need to use plant-based alternatives that are not too strongly flavoured. Cococnut milk and coconut cream have a distinct flavour and are best avoided for this dish. Most other plant-based milks and creams should be fine, but use unsweetened versions. We note also that if you are in the UK then Elmlea make a plant-based double cream, which would be a good alternative to try. However, please note that as we have not tried the dish with these alternatives, we are unable to guarantee the results.
