Liqueur for Anglo Italian Trifle

Nigella's Anglo-Italian Trifle (from Nigella Summer and on the Nigella website) is so named as it uses some typically Italian ingredients, such as amaretti cookies, mascarpone cheese ad the Italian lemon-flavoured liqueur called limoncello.

However if you do not have limocello available then it would be possible to use an orange-flavoured liqueur and orange would still go well with the blackberries and amaratti cookies. Aperol is the Italian orange liqueur however it has a bittersweet tatse and is not ideal for a trifle and is better mixed for aperetifs. Instead we would prefer to use a sweeter liqueur with a lighter base, such as Cointreau or another triple sec.
