Lunchbox Treats Rolling

Asked by dkaa. Answered on 12th April 2014

Full question

In the US our cornflakes are rather large and I can't roll the mixture into a ball. What are the 'latex CSI gloves' and would that make the mixture not stick to my hands? I don't know that I have seen them, what could I use instead?

Our answer

Nigella's Lunchbox Treats (from Nigella Express and on the Nigella website) are a type of Rice Krispie treat that are rolled into balls. If the flakes of your cornflakes are slightly large then you could gently crush them slightly with your hands to break them up a little (but not into small crumbs).

The mixture is a little sticky and so Nigella suggests wearing disposable latex gloves to roll the mixture into balls, as the mixture is less likely to stick to the gloves. Nigella often refers to the gloves as CSI (Crime Scene Investigator) gloves as you often see these gloves being worn on TV detective shows. The gloves can often be found in supermarkets, usually with the dishwashing gloves). Some DIY stores sell them (though check that they are OK for food use) and you can buy boxes of the goves from various suppliers on-line.

If you can't find the gloves then you could try using slightly dampened hands to roll the mixtuire into balls. Alternatively press the mixture into 12 paper muffin cases or 24 mini muffin cases.
