Full question
Hi - my husband decided to have and Edwardian themed party for our house's centenary this year! I have been appointed the person to provide the food - for 150. He thought canapes and champagne originally - but this has been scaled down to nibbles and prosecco. However, I am freaking out, do you have any suggestions? Please help. Thank you Jeanne
Our answer
Any sort of party food for 150 people is a challenge for a home cook and the first consideration is the amount of fridge and oven space that you will have. It is also a lot of work for one person so it would be sensible to try and enlist a little help on the day of the party. It would also help to see if you can borrow some fridge space from a neighbour. We would suggest focussing on only 2 or 3 home-made nibbles and supplementing these with plenty of olives, crisps and nuts.
Nigella's Parmesan Shortbreads (from Nigellissima and on the Nigella website) are great party nibbles that can be made a couple of days ahead and stored in airtight containers in a cool place. If you want to make them further ahead then you can freeze the baked shortbreads for up to 3 months. Nigella's Party Parma Ham Bundles (from Christmas) can be assembled first thing in the morning, put in airtight containers and refrigerated until needed. If you have to layer the bundles in a container then put a piece of clingfilm between each layer and don't pack them into the containers too tightly. Finally for hot nibble cocktail sausages are usually very popular and we would suggest Nigella's Cocktail Sausage recipe (from Nigella Express and on the Nigella website), with a soy and honey glaze. The recipe is enough for 75 sausages so should scale up fairly easily for your party. Don't overcrowd the roasting pans and you may find the disposable foil BBQ drip trays useful for these, for easier post-party cleanup.
