Pigs in Blankets Baking Time

Asked by Homework. Answered on 8th August 2014

Full question

I want to make some Pigs (pork chipolatas) In Blankets (puff pastry). Just want to check if I need to cook the sausages first? I thought the cooking time might be enough for the pastry but not for the meat. Thanks, Homework

Our answer

Nigella has two recipes for Pigs In Blankets. The first is from Nigella Bites and the sausages are wrapped in a scone-like dough. The second is from Christmas and the sausages are wrapped in puff pastry. Both of the recipes recommend a hot oven (220c/425F) and a baking time of around 15 minutes.

If you have used the skinny chipolata sausages or cocktail sausages, or some frankfurters or cocktail franks, then the baking time should be sufficient to cook both the pastry and the sausages. The skinny sausages cook through fairly quickly in a hot oven.If you are unsure then you can cut into one and check the chipolata is cooked all the way through. If not then lower the oven to 180c/350F and bake for a further 5 minutes.
