UK Version Of Corn Syrup

Full question
Could you let me know what the UK version of corn syrup is? Some the recipes from US call for this and I can't seem to buy it over here.
Our answer
Corn syrup (high fructose corn syrup) comes in two types, light and dark. Light corn syrup is the most commonly used version and it is a refined sugar syrup made from corn starch and flavoured with vanilla. It is hygroscopic so helps to retain moisture in baked goods. Karo is the best-known brand and can be bought on-line in the UK.
In the UK golden syrup is the closest substitute and is a refined sugar syrup made from sugar cane. It is more viscous than corn syrup and it can be used as a substitute for corn syrup in most recipes. However if a large quantity of the syrup is used, such as for a pecan pie, you may find that the filling is a little more chewy when made with golden syrup. For a similar pie made with golden syrup do try Nigella's Pecan-Plus Pie (from CHRISTMAS). Honey is another alternative but has quite a strong flavour that can overpower some recipes. Maple syrup could be used as a substitute for dark corn syrup, though again the flavour could affect the finished dish and it is a very expensive alternative if used in large quantities.
