What Can I Use Instead Of Clementines For The Christmas Chutney?

Asked by Trudy sampson. Answered on 20th October 2022

Full question

Hi there, for the Christmas Chutney what can I use instead of the clementine as we don’t seem to have them here in Australia. Would an orange do the job? Thanks.

Our answer

Nigella's Christmas Chutney (from NIGELLA CHRISTMAS) is made with fresh or frozen cranberries, dates and clementines (or satsumas), which are all ingredients that are popular over the Christmas period. It is perfect with cold cuts (including Christmas lunch leftovers) and cheese.

The chutney uses the zest and juice of two clementines. In Australia these are hard to find but we understand that mandarins are more readily available and these would be the most suitable alternative. They are a similar size to clementines, so you could use two. Otherwise you could use the zest and juice of one very large or one-and-a-half medium-sized oranges. Scrub the skins of the fruit with hot soapy water, rinse well with clean water and dry before using, to remove any edible wax that may be on the surface of the skin.
