What Can I Use Instead Of Ginger Wine For The Ginger Passionfruit Plate Trifle?

Asked by MMcWh. Answered on 6th June 2024

Full question

Ah, the Ginger Passionfruit Plate Trifle is a lovely prospect, but I'm in the US and am not familiar with Stone's Green Ginger Wine, or its flavor. What might be a substitute?

Our answer

Nigella's Ginger And Passionfruit Plate Trifle (from NIGELLA EXPRESS) is perfect when you would like an impressive dessert but don't have much time. The base is a store-bought ginger cake that is moistened with Stone's Green Ginger Wine.

Ginger wine is a fortified wine that has been fermented with fresh ginger. Stone's is one of the well-known brands but there is also Crabbie's Green Ginger Wine. It has a raisiny flavour with a kick of ginger. Ginger liqueurs have become more popular over the last few years and there are several small batch producers. Otherwise, you could use an orange liqueur with a pinch of ground ginger added. If you need to avoid alcohol then use a splash of ginger cordial (or for the US ginger syrup).
