One of the best presents I have ever got was a huge, rustic-looking turquoise bowl crammed with Amalfi lemons. Not only was it in itself beautiful and uplifting, bringing a much needed piece of Italy into my kitchen despite the driving rain outside, but I was so touched that someone had been so particularly thoughtful and given me a present that was absolutely made for me.
So I'm thrilled now to have been given, from family just back from holidaying in Positano (poor them) a ridiculously giant lemon-type fruit that was so staggering I had to have it photographed in front of my face to show the scale of it. I can hardly bring myself to use it, so much pleasure does it give me just to look at, but I fear wasting it would be even more terrible. So it's a lemon-fest for me: should it be lemon linguine, lemon risotto or lemon polenta cake? I'm rather thinking, greedy though it is, that considering the size of this magnificent monster citrus, that I'll have the wherewithal for all three...
