Mix the flour, sugar, butter, nuts, baking soda in a bowl Add water to make a thickish batter Add the beaten egg and vanilla Bake for half an hour or till skewers come out clean
Introduction
This was the very first thing I learned to bake...my aunt taught me this because it was so easy. No beating, no whipping...just mix and you're ready to go!

- 1 cup sugar
- ⅓ cup chopped dates
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ⅓ cup chopped walnuts
- 1½ tablespoons butter
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup boiling water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
