Introduction

A very easy and superfast fish curry from North India, a recipe passed down in my family. You can use any freshwater or sea fish as long as it is firm and white. King fish, seer fish and cod are good options.

A very easy and superfast fish curry from North India, a recipe passed down in my family. You can use any freshwater or sea fish as long as it is firm and white. King fish, seer fish and cod are good options.

Ingredients

Serves: 2

Metric Cups
  • ½ kilogram fish fillets (cut into thick slices)
  • 2 onions (minced)
  • ½ tablespoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (or chilli powder)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric (to taste)
  • 250 millilitres natural yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil
  • 1⅛ pounds fish fillets (cut into thick slices)
  • 2 onions (minced)
  • ½ tablespoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (or chilli powder)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric (to taste)
  • 9 fluid ounces natural yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil

Method

  • Heat the oil and add the fenugreek seeds, ensuring they don't get burnt
  • Add the minced onion and till light brown
  • Add yogurt and cook till the mixture is dry
  • Add the spices and cook for another 2 minutes
  • Add water to make a curry
  • Bring to a boil and add the fish
  • Cover and cook till opaque, approx. 10 minutes
  • Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves. The perfect accompaniment would be plain boiled rice

    If u have the time, marinate the fish in lime juice, salt, paprika and turmeric for half an hour.
