Introduction

Traditional Irish bread. This is my recipe.

Ingredients

Serves: 6

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 13½ fluid ounces buttermilk
  • ½ soda bread flour (or strong plain flour)

Method

Soda Bread is a community recipe submitted by KitchenGoddess and has not been tested by Nigella.com so we are not able to answer questions regarding this recipe.

  • Preheat oven to gas 8/230c
  • Sieve dry ingredients together.
  • Pour in most of the milk and using one hand mix together, add more milk if needed, the dough should be softish but not too wet.
  • Kneed just enough to make it tidy but don't over work it or it will be tough. Shape into a round and place on a baking tray. Cut a deepish cross in it (traditionally done to let the fairies out).
  • Bake for 15minutes, then turn the oven down to gas 6 and bake for another 20-30minutes. When cooked it should sound hollow when tapped underneath.
  • NB Can be used to make sandwiches etc, or fried as part of the famous Irish Fry
